Characteristics of the Galician language
Galician is a Romance language that is spoken by 2.5 Million people in Spain in the autonomous community of Galicia and the neighboring areas such as Asturias and Castile and León. It used to be a dialect of Portuguese, but is now highly influenced by the standard Castilian Spanish and also uses the Spanish spelling conventions.
Even though Galician is said to have no real dialects, there are three main dialectal blocks that divide into the Eastern Galician, the Central Galician and the Western Galician. The standard Galician is based on the Central Galician, but it contains Western and Eastern Galician traits as well. It uses the Latin alphabet and has a large set of falling diphthongs. The lexicon mainly shows relation to Latin origin, but there are also a small number of words of Germanic or Celtic origin. Due to the influence of Spanish it contains some nouns from the Arabic.
Brief history of the Galician language
The Galician that first started to appear in Latin texts in the 12th century is called Galician-Portuguese, Old Portuguese or Old Galician. It developed from Vulgar Latin. Between the 13th and 15th centuries many songs, poems, religious texts, etc. were written in Galician-Portuguese and it became the most used language other than Latin.
With the reign of Alfonso X and Castilian Spanish becoming the official language of the chancellery of the Kingdom of Castile, the Galician-Portuguese began to be influenced by the Castilian Spanish. When the elites of the kingdom started speaking Castilian Spanish in the 17th century, Galician-Portuguese had only little literacy and lost importance. It then was called Middle Galician and continued to further separate from Portuguese.
During the Franco regime Galician was banned in Spain, like other languages that were not Spanish. In 1978 Galician gained official status. When the Law for Linguistic Normalization was approved in 1983, the language was revived and reinstated back into society.
