Characteristics of the Dutch language
Dutch, the native official name of which is Nederlands, is a West Germanic language that is spoken by approximately 23 Million people. It is mainly spoken in the Netherlands, where it is the only official language and Belgium, where it is one of the three official languages. Together with German and English it builds the West Germanic language group and therefore holds similarities to both languages. For this reason it is said, that Dutch is the easiest language for native English speakers to learn. As in English, but in contrast to German, it does not use a case system. There are two definite articles de and het.
One of the most widely known Dialects is “Flemish”, which is the Dutch spoken in Belgium. It is characterized by a large number of French loanwords that cannot be found in Standard Dutch. Many cities have city dialects that only differ a little from each other. The daughter language of Dutch is Afrikaans, which evolved mainly from 17th century Dutch dialects.
Brief history of the Dutch language
All modern Germanic languages gradually split off from Proto-Germanic, beginning around the Early Middle Ages. In that time the Old Frankish language experienced a consonant shift, which led to the split into several sub-dialects. One of them was Old Dutch, which was spoken from the 6th century onwards and slowly evolved into Middle Dutch in the 12th century. Middle Dutch is a collective name for closely related dialects spoken in the present-day Dutch-speaking area –Flemish, Zealandic, Brabantian, Hollandic, Limburgish and Low Saxon. Those dialects were mutually intelligible. After Spain conquered Antwerp in 1585, which resulted in refugees coming to the Netherlands, the standardization of Middle Dutch began. The Standard Dutch has mainly developed from Brabantian and the Hollandic dialects. In 1637 the first bible translation into Dutch, that people from all over the United Provinces could understand, was published. Since the 16th century the Standard Dutch has evolved little.
