Characteristics of the Bulgarian language
The Bulgarian language is an Indo-European language that is mainly spoken in Bulgaria, parts of Greece, Romania, Moldova and Ukraine by 8 Million people.
Bulgarian is mutually intelligible with Macedonian and also closely related to Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Slovenian. But in comparison to those, the language shows a complete lack of case declension in the noun. As in Balkan languages, such as Albanian and Romanian, the definite article is placed after the noun or adjective. Also the infinitive form of the verb is replaced with a clause, like it can be seen in Modern Greek.
The Dialects of the Bulgarian language can be divided into two dialect groups which basically differ in the derivations of the yat vowel Ѣ. In the Western Dialects the yat is pronounced as e in all positions. In the Eastern dialects the pronunciation of the yat alters between ya, if the next syllable does not contain a front vowel, and e in any other case. The literary language norm is based on the Eastern dialects and it uses the Cyrillic alphabet.
Brief history of the Bulgarian language
Old Bulgaric started to appear in religious writings during the 9th century. It was also referred to as “Old Church Slavonic” as it was mainly used to translate the Bible and other liturgical literature from Greek into Slavic. For this purpose a Glagolitic alphabet was created, which was replaced by an early version of the Cyrillic alphabet over the following centuries. At this point the language was still closely related to Slavic, but was rather considered to be a southern dialect.
After major innovations in the 12th century the language served as the official administration language of the Second Bulgarian Empire and was then called Middle Bulgarian. Modern Bulgarian is said to date from the 16th century onwards. The Modern Bulgarian went through some modifications and because numerous versions of the alphabet were around, a version of the alphabet with 32 letters was proposed in the 1870s, which was widely used afterwards. This version set the base for the alphabet used nowadays. Within the scope of the orthographic reform of 1945 the letters yat (Ѣ) and yus (ѫ) were removed. During the long period of Ottoman rule a lot of Turkish words were adopted into Bulgarian.
After the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union, Bulgarian became one of its official languages.
